Everybody loved Doris. Ray Romano and more of Doris Roberts’ former costars remembered her on Monday, April 18, after learning of her death at the age of 90. The Everybody Loves Raymond actress’ rep confirmed to Us Weekly on Monday that Roberts died in her sleep on Sunday, April 17.
The Emmy-winning actress’ career spanned more than six decades, beginning with her role in 1952 on TV series Studio One. Roberts, who is best known for portraying helicopter mom Marie Barone in Everybody Loves Raymond, scored four Emmy awards for her work on the CBS series.
“Doris
Roberts had an energy and a spirit that amazed me. She never stopped,”
Romano, who played her son on the long-running sitcom that went off the
air in 2005, told Us Weekly in a statement on Monday. “Whether
working professionally or with her many charities, or just nurturing and
mentoring a young, green comic trying to make it as an actor, she did
it all with such a grand love for life and people and I will miss her
dearly.”
Patricia Heaton,
who played Romano’s wife on the show, also mourned Roberts via Twitter:
“Truly the end of an era. My wonderful TV mother-in-law and ELR nemesis
Doris Roberts was a consummate professional from whom I learned so
much. She was funny and tough and loved life, living it to the fullest.
Nothing gave her greater joy than her three wonderful grandchildren, of
whom she was so proud. It truly was a privilege Doris. I love you and
miss you.”
Brad Garrett, who played Robert on of Everybody Loves Raymond, told Deadline
in a statement: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Doris Roberts,
an amazing lady and brilliant actor. Doris was vibrant and full of life
both on and off the stage, and I am so grateful we shared so many
wonderful memories. I will miss her greatly and will always remember her
incredible kindness, humor, talent and heart.”
Everybody Loves Raymond producer Phil Rosenthal and alum Madylin Sweeten (who played Roberts’ granddaughter Ally Barone) also expressed their loss on Twitter.
Rosenthal’s wife, Monica Horan, who played Garrett’s wife on the hit show, took to Facebook to share her beloved memories of the actress.
“I
am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with you and learn
from you,” she wrote in a lengthy post. “You always had my back (‘he’s
in your light’!!!), you always encouraged me in my work, and you
continue to inspire me with your lifelong dedication to being a working
actor.”
